A Bit Overwhelming

Both Wentworth and I have felt a bit overwhelmed lately... the only difference is what's doing the overwhelming: my closet's colorful collection of scarves vs. Monday's cardiology exam and (even scarier still) Wednesday's hematology/oncology exam.

I spent Saturday morning at a Ob/Gyn conference across the street from Baylor at Methodist Hospital. Though my specialty decision is still a long way down the road, I find myself drawn to the field that has a little bit of everything: women's health, surgery, babies!, emergency, continuity of care, young girls, old ladies, etc.

Casual Encounters of the Friend Kind

Earlier this week, I caught up with newly engaged Risa over Thai food and gawked at her sparkling ring. On Thursday evening I stopped by Tiffany’s birthday celebration at Chocolate Bar (above) after an evening of Ethics (Kant vs. utilitarianism). Late Friday night I saw a screening of the barbershop documentary American Harmony at the Angelika. I really enjoyed the movie for its independent exploration of such a niche cultural phenomenon (like Wordplay or Spellbound). I regret to say that my blog will lack some luster as exams near. Next week is the last week of classes, followed by exams in cardiology and hematology/oncology, and finally a trip home to Idaho! Is it just me, or does Wentworth look pooped in this picture?

Addendum to last week's post: let thrifty bloggers do the work and find the deals for you. I’m really loving The Freebie Blogger and Common Sense with Money. To keep my couponing hobby separate from blog-worthy adventures, I’ve decided to keep a shopping diary.

Study Break Shenanigans

For tonight's study break, I went to redeem a sweet deal at CVS (described below). On my brief, 3-minute journey to the CVS around the corner, I listened to Houston's #1 Hit Music Station 104.1 KRBE. I happened to catch the cue to call and wound up being lucky caller #25. My days of Trivia Challenge with AM1080 KVNI came rushing back to me. I didn't have to answer any quiz questions except my name, the name of the radio station 'hooking me up,' and what I was doing (to which I sheepishly replied, "Going to CVS"- hah!). So now I have four tickets to the new G.I. Joe flick heading my way along with a G.I. Joe game for an Xbox 360... not that I own one. Sounds like a post-test/Labor Day party is in order!

As for the CVS deal, here's the breakdown:
L'Oreal Skin Genesis Cleanser $7.99 (-$2 sale price, -$1 mfn coupon)
L'Oreal Revitalift Eye Cream $19.99 (-$5 sale price, -$5 mfn coupon)
(-$4 CVS coupon for spending $20 on beauty items)
CVS 10 count tampons $1.89
(-$6.97 ExtraBucks from previous deals)
$6.40 = TOTAL out-of-pocket (on CVS giftcard)
$11.89 = CVS ExtraBucks earned (theoretical gain of $5.49)

(Note: Accounting for the value of using past ExtraBucks, I bought the three items for $1.48... without discounts I would have paid $32.33!)

The Beat Goes On

As the material in cardiology and hematology continues to grow in size and complexity, my fascination with the human body grows with it. The main cardiology professor is wonderfully entertaining, and the hematology course is... well... thank goodness for review books and study guides! On Thursday afternoon I shadowed my new preceptor, a rheumatologist at Ben Taub. Friday night was the first years' white coat ceremony (above), which has now reaffirmed my commitment to medical school for the third time. I called out the first 50 names to receive white coats. Thank goodness for the Bob Johnsons and Jane Smiths of the world (and thank you to their parents). To all of the Indians, Chinese, Eastern Europeans, and other folks with unique names, I apologize for fumbling the pronunciation despite my best efforts.Afterward, I joined a few Baylor classmates (Nikki, Nico, Elyse, Joseph) and Rice friends (Jenn, Robert, Maiella) at the Museum of Natural Science for Mixers and Elixirs (above). We danced under the dinosaurs, snacked on appetizers, and saw a trippy Pink Floyd show in the planetarium. On Saturday, Kroger doubled coupons up to (and including) $1, so I stocked up on groceries at fantastic prices. Sunday is a day of rest - by rest I mean STUDYING.

Environmentally Friendly in a Friendly Environment

Up until very recently, I thought this post would be titled something along the lines of "Ominous Outlook?" or "I Saw the Sign." Last week began with a series of bad omens: a vulture tearing apart a rotten bloated fish along the bayou, a dead crow's tail feathers eerily jutting straight up from the grass along the bike trail, and even a large, dead sewer rat on the way to school. These unsettling tableaux prophesied the announcement that several people in my class came down with swine flu, my bike would have two flats separated by 24 hours, and the news that my transmission "need$ $ome work." Thankfully, this series of unfortunate events did not bleed into the weekend. It turns out all it took was a few friends to turn the beat around. On Wednesday night, Sarah (above) celebrated her birthday with a few friends (below, with Amy) at Houston hot spot Bar Annie. It was fun to mingle with Houston socialites whose faces often grace the pages of the posh publication Paper City. Word of warning for those trying out the swanky lounge: check your check. Though the food was great, the service was marginal, and the ballooned bill was botched (not in our favor, of course). On Friday evening I caught up with travel buddy Risa, fresh from her extended European vacation. We chitchatted about this and that... I'm really going to miss her when she goes off to Penn for law school in a couple weeks! Speaking of great friends, I had a divine evening with Brandi and Peter in Hermann Park on Saturday. We went to a Rice Alumni mixer at Miller Outdoor Theatre that overlapped with the Houston Shakespeare Festival's production of "Twelfth Night." I also saw the Scullys' newly-painted accent wall, kitchen island, and entry nook while enjoying some of Peter's homemade vanilla chai sweet tea.I tried my own hand at culinary creation on Sunday night. I found a few recipes for a quiche I had in mind but scrapped them all and just started throwing ingredients together: spinach, tomatoes, feta, green onions, and a hint of garlic (plus eggs and half-and-half, of course). I poured the ingredients into a homemade pie crust and the excess into a muffin pan. I have to admit, the resulting dish was delish. I shared the 12 mini quiches with my PRN group (the first years I advise). It was fun to experiment and clear out the fridge!
My final weekend activity involved making a trip to the West U recycling station. I unloaded trillions of clear glass, colored glass, tin cans, and aluminum cans. It was a surprisingly popular place with lots of earth-conscious families pulling in to unload their recyclables. In Mom's spirit of rewards for mucking out, I treated myself to flowers (above- a reject bouquet for $2.50!).

Back in the Saddle Again

I helped out with orientation on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. This year's theme 'Medical Musical' inspired our group name 'Mammarhea.' Fellow MS-2 Ang and I worked together to show the new kids around the block and even make them a spaghetti feast. On Thursday night, Baylor med students took over the second floor at Flying Saucer, a downtown bar. It was tons of fun to mix, mingle, and share summer stories.Jenn (above) and Robert had an engagement shower in Houston on Saturday. I helped host with two other bridesmaids. Eager to be productive in the kitchen, I made cheesy artichoke dip and cupcakes.I had a late-night rendezvous with Brandi, Peter, and more friends at 59 Diner... catching up over ketchup and hash browns, I guess. Classes (Cardiology and Hematology) started on Monday. Tiffany and I eased our way into the block by taking a breather tonight (Tuesday) to watch Judd Apatow's new flick 'Funny People.' I enjoyed it, but it was- and felt- really, really long.
